The International Sommelier Guild (ISG) is an international credentialing authority in sommelier, wine, and wine business education. ISG provides a structured, progressive certification system designed to support career development, academic depth, and leadership capability through a clearly defined educational pathway.
Established in 1982, ISG has grown from its North American origins into an international education provider delivering standardized programs across multiple regions and languages, while maintaining a single academic and assessment framework.
ISG certifications are designed as a coherent progression, allowing candidates to enter at an appropriate level and advance as their professional goals evolve.
The ISG certification pathway includes:
Each level builds upon the previous, ensuring continuity, academic rigor, and professional relevance.
ISG programs are designed as comprehensive, self-contained courses, rather than modular systems requiring cumulative extensions. Beyond still wines, core subject areas — including sparkling wines, fortified wines, distilled spirits, other fermented and distilled beverages, service fundamentals, sensory evaluation, and, at advanced levels, wine business management, hospitality operations, leadership, and financial fundamentals — are integrated directly into the primary curriculum.
Tuition reflects the full academic scope of each certification, with all required learning materials included as outlined. Candidates are not required to purchase or consult external or third-party materials, nor are they required to pay for additional extracurricular materials or courses within the ISG system.
Required examinations are included as specified for each certification, and repeat examinations, where permitted, do not incur additional fees, ensuring transparency, academic continuity, and assessment fairness throughout the certification pathway.
Through collaborations with governments, host schools, universities, and industry partners, ISG programs are delivered across North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Oceania, and Africa, following a standardized curriculum and assessment structure regardless of location or delivery format.
ISG education is offered through classroom, online, live online, and hybrid delivery models, maintaining consistent academic expectations across all formats.
ISG education integrates multiple disciplines essential to modern hospitality and beverage leadership. Across the full certification pathway, candidates engage with interconnected areas of study including:
This multidisciplinary framework provides graduates with a broad and deep understanding of the industry, extending beyond narrow role-based training.
ISG’s educational philosophy and academic standards are guided by its leadership and its independent Board of Education.
Each ISG certification page provides detailed information on curriculum scope, delivery formats, examinations, and progression requirements. Candidates are encouraged to review individual programs to determine the most appropriate entry point within the ISG certification pathway.
